13 San Francesco Church

In Lucca the presence of the Franciscans dates back to 1228, but the church was rebuilt and enlarged in the 14th century...

The Church of San Francesco with its aisle-less nave is one of the first foundations in Italy  after the death of the Saint (1226). In 2010, the Foundation Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca took over the building and launched a major restoration - completed in 2013 - first of the monastery and then of the church, creating the monumental complex of San Francesco, today the headquarters of a university and location for events of major importance.
